It saddens me to have to write such an update but I have been getting a lot of inquiries…one of my old friends and a recent competitor of East Bay Summer Series, Dee Sargent passed away Saturday evening following the event. He was 38 years old and leaves behind a wife and 2 children.

I know everyone meets a lot of new people during these events so I just wanted to share team photo of Dee so you can put a face to the name.

The final tournament of 2010; Mission Pipe presents Summer Pitch 5 will be dedicated to Dee and all the proceeds will be donated to Team Sargent Trust Fund.

4 Days to go...Who's ready?

4 Days to go until the 2010 Eastbay Masters Presented by Prime Smoke Meats. The horseshoe community has been buzzing lately…yes Round 2 of the East Bay Summer Series but also with news…

FROM SFHPC site: Friend of SFHPC, Brian Simmons beat Alan Francis, 18-15 at the NHPA World Championships in Cedar Rapid, Iowa. Brian had 87.5%, Alan had 85% ringers. This was Mens A-1 class, not the Championships yet…(FYI Alan won again) North Bay local Kimmy Stockli wins the Women's C division going 15-0 with a 64.33% average!! Wow! (Kimmy ended up 15th overall in the world...Sue Snyder 4th overall)

With everyone gunning for Team Six Pack rumors are they have actually kick up there training a notch…WELL that means all the other teams need to kick it up two notches

The Porkers have been spotted at Robertson Park getting a little help from none other than 2006 Champion Steve Gibson will see how that pays off.

Speaking of Steve Gibson he actually got his partner Eric Kramer to get out and do some training watch out for this duo at round 2

The SF’s Double 06 will be back for round 2 and after their fine performance at Lord of The Ringers 2 and their love of bacon they will a favorite for sure.

1 week away…and couple days

As we approach the next round of the 2010 East Bay Summer Series tour there are many familiar players sitting in the top five. Team Six Pack & Team John Wayne seems to always be in the running in the top most of the season. However three are few new faces Team Green’s Jon Bastian & Carolyn Allasia, Team Rockstar Ken Baker & Marc Bull one of the teams looking to improve in round 2.

The question is can the reign of Team Six Pack be stopped? In this reporters opinion yes! Team Six Pack was against the ropes on more than one occasion in round 1 and with everyone’s game improving we should expect there run to finally come to an end.

In other team news, can we expect the returns of veteran teams The Reservoir Dog or Team Hustla…what about the The Good Ole Boys these were podium regulars back in 08/09. Hopefully there is no golf tournaments scheduled. We did confirm the Panty Droppers will be back for round 2; also a couple of teams from the 209 area code will be making the drive to compete in the bay area’s premier horseshoe pitching series.

A recent rumor has surfaced in the horseshoe pitching community. The notion that Joey “All Right” Hartless and Scott “The Hanford Kid” Slattery may reunite for a run at the cup.

The Hanford Kid, best known for his raft-The Exxon “Valdze” and his propensity for stealing lighters, will make the journey from Chico, California to participate in the 2010 East Bay Masters presented by Prime Smoke Meats.

Hartless is well known for his ‘bar shirt’ collection, and for his appetite for potted meat. This duo date back many years, and although they have not seen each other in a long time-could be a darkhorse if the magic is still there.

Just few weeks to go...

East Bay Masters Presented by

Well summer is underway and Round 2 of East Bay Summer Series is quickly approaching. Aug 14th is the date the action will be going down. Back with us is title sponsor Prime Smoked Meats; expect the finest bacon in the world to be given out to our top teams again. Of course let’s not forget the coveted green jackets…one of the most desired of all trophies in professional sports. Last year Frago & Stangle were the lucky recipients of the blazers will they be wearing green again on Aug 14th we will see.

Team Six Pack has targets on their backs this year and there are a lot of teams gunning for the duo. Team Rockstar are having strong summer this year been top four team in the last 3 tournaments they have competed in. Team Green from SF along with SFHPC Team Double 06 has their sights on Team Six Pack. Obviously EBSS own Team John Wayne, Bacon Saturday, and the Real Housewives of Alameda County are looking for Bacon & Green Jackets. A rare feat in any sport, NASCAR Champion Jimmy Johnson, multi time Tour De France winner Lance Armstrong (7 straight), Tennis Champion Roger Federer, and now Team Six-Pack Eric Frago & Brad Stangle have Four-Peated! East Bay Summer Series Kicked off the season with a 22 Team double elimination showdown. The weather looked a bit windy & gloomy in the early part of the day but that did not slow down 44 of the Bay Area’s best horseshoe pitches from sticking out to see who would become Summer Kick-Off Champions 2010.

2006 runner ups Team Fishscale out of the gates strong looking like they did back in the day.
Double-O6 Peter Z of SFHPC was not “ON” persuade but teammate Gino was and carried the duo to several more wins and enough ringers for Gino to be crowned the Ringer King
Team Rockstar looked strong & steady… nickel & dime'n there opponents for solid 4th place finish
John Wayne stealthed into final 4 and beat Team Rockstar but couldn’t get pass Team Green
Otis’s Boys back for 2010 and looking keep there championships hopes alive with top 10 finish
Bacon Saturday eliminating SFHP again with last minute flurry of ringers
Team Green moved in to finals Jon Bastian & Carolyn Allasia looking to dethrone Team Six Pack but had to settle for Silver Medals Other Happenings on the Pits
Team David & Goliath & Team Lulu from SJ were all first timers… a victory may not have happen but they learned the game and ALL scored their first ringers
Real House Wives of Alameda County were on a terror. Racking up 4 wins making them a hot team to watch in 2010.
The D-Nozzles back for 2010 and we will see if they can break the top 5 like they did last year
EBSS may not count the money game victories for championship points but there was some action going down. Dead Ringers being beat TWICE by the Hyphy Wifey’s

Let’s get Readyeeeeeeeee to Pitchhhhhhh!!!

Summer Kick off is near people. The Summer Series inbox has been getting flooded with questions, comments, and suggestions. Thank you staying involved. So with regards to the final draft of the 2010 rules…ALL games will not exceed 35min (excluding the finals). Stop watches will be placed at each court so the athletes on the score tower side will be responsible to start and monitor the stop watch. SIMPLE! This will also help keep things moving.

TEAM NEWS (Rumor Mill)

· Ok let’s start with the latest Team Six Pack update. Frego has been claiming a ringer percentage of 50% that is scary good. Stangle on the other silent possibly training in some secluded facility?

· Gibson news…Steve IN, Danny & Tommy OUT! Why you ask? Baby shower yes a baby shower, two grown men will be missing the tournament for a shower.

· A small group of athletes from the greater San Jose area are looking to make there debut at Summer Series this weekend. Good Luck Cross Fit SJ.

· One of the Tri-Valleys OG horseshoe promoters is back at EBSS Josh Red Reding and he supposedly has recruited a few more players for 2010 will see if any sleepers show up.

· Fixture at the EBSS event Team D Nozzles Jeff Ally & Dale Garret will be hoping to make another top 5 finish like they did at East Bay Master presented by Prime Smoke Meats last year. I will try to add more Neil Diamond to my playlist.

· On more serious note Team SNUS United States Ryan Brown was involved in a car accident this past week. This could lead to an open spot on a premier team (2007 Champs). Rumors are circulating BUT not confirmed if Ryan is unable to pitch Josh Schreiber might be the man to fill in for Browner. Stay Tuned…

Final Thoughts

As always there will open practice Friday evening June 18th I should be there by 5:00pm (maybe earlier). It is great opportunity to calibrate that pitching arm. Also feel free to show up EARLY Saturday morning (9:00am) to help prepare the pits, (pick, rake, water, rake) Hang signs, set up Pop-Ups…I could always use extra hands.

Week & Half to go...

Ladies & Gentlemen we are only a week and half away from the season opener. The horseshoe community has been buzzing lately.

TEAM NEWS

Frego has been training on a regular basis and is rumored to have gotten even better. We all know his weakness (booze) so let’s do our best to slow him down.
Team Dead Ringers Steve Gibson cocky as always says he has been playing from time to time but BUT what about the other Gib boys? Rumors are circulating they are obligated to attend some a baby shower!?!? JEEZ…I thought the Gibson family had priorities.
Peter Z, John B, Gino…and some of the SFHPC are looking forward to the event so be on the lookout for those guys

Spotted the last few weeks at P-Town senior center, Real house Wives of Alameda County, Hyphy Wifys, Team Bacon Saturday, Team SNUS United States, and Team Rockstar everyone just trying to get loose before season opener.
As always Team John Wayne John Viola has been avoiding pitching shoes until day of the tournament, but his team mate Nate Wayne has been tearing up the shoes of Lake Don Pedro
2006 Runner-Ups Team Fishscale will be returning to Summer Series in 2010 Matt Gery & Cambell Jones let’s see what these two veterans can do.

Hey how about that ride in? I guess that’s they call it Sin City. Thanks for coming back for another action pack filled summer of good ole fashion horseshoe pitching. OK well maybe not old fashion but never the less... Looks like I finally got the dates locked down and our sponser lined up for 2010. Last year East Bay Summer Series had tremendous growth with new outside sponsors & increase repeat participants we really exceeded our 2009 goals. We averaged 23 teams per event! For 2010 expect better competition, smoother running games, better prizes and always good times. The 2010 Kick Off will be June 19th that means all you pitchers need to get out there before then and knock the rust off that throwing arm. Welcome to the official site of East Bay Summer Series the bay area’s premier amature horseshoe pitching championship. Summer Series is a 3 round tour which runs throughout the summer. Each tournament is scored individually with tournament champions featured at each event. A running total of points are logged and each athlete then is in a championship point’s race with one lucky team that will become Summer Series Tour Champions.

Round 3 The final stop on the tour is Mission Pipe & Cigar 's Summer Pitch 5: The Finale. DATE: Oct 2, 2010

Each tournament features First, Second, & Third place prizes. A ringer king award is also given for the player who tallies the most ringers on tournament day. All tournaments are double elimination and feature a slightly modified NHPA rule book. Summer Series home courts are located I Livermore CA at Roberson Park. It features 8 regulation length horseshoe pits complete with score towers, rakes, & brooms. The pit material is sand/dirt mixture (not clay). Pitching boxes are standard length there no extension for women’s line. Female players can still pitch 10ft closer as stated in the rules.

East Bay Summer Series Presents Both Sides Featuring John Bastian & Peter Zepponi

2009 was had its ups and down the economy may have been in the crapper but 2009 saw some real positive happenings. Eastbay Summer Series grew and became a full blown championship tour. And the San Francisco Horse Pitching Club restored the famous Horseshoe Grotto in Golden Gate Park. Peter Zepponi & John Bastian were instrumental in getting the facility back into shape. Peter is the founding member of SFHPC and John a local in SF became a member by proxy. Since then the duo have teamed up from time to time to compete in various tournaments, Blood Wizard's Lord of the Ringers 2009, 2009 East Bay Masters presented by Prime Smoke Meats, and 2009 SF International Horseshoe Pitching Tournament. Peter was able to rack up enough points to finish 15th in EBSS in 2009 and ringer king at round 2. John who made it to round 2 & 3 finished 5th overall in the series. And with that being said here are there sides of the story.

2009 Saw the rise and fall of many players on the tour. Team Bacon Saturday Ken Grimes & Sean Taylor improved all summer long finding them in the semi’s at Summer Pitch 4. RULE 1 - COURT LAYOUT See diagram.((sketches are shown following this document))
Section A. Semi-PERMANENT COURTS

1. Dimensions - A horseshoe court shall be a level rectangular area 6 ft wide and a minimum of 46 ft long. A north-south setting is recommended for outdoor courts to minimize the effects of the sun. Tournament officials can approve courts in facing different directions.

2. Pitcher's Box - The pitcher's box is the square 6 ft by 6 ft area at each end of the court. It is composed of 2 parts - 1) the pit, and 2) the pitching platforms. a. PIT - The pit is a rectangular area filled with the substance onto which the shoes are pitched. Its maximum length (in the direction in which the shoes are pitched) is 72 inches and its minimum length is 43 inches. Its maximum width is 36 inches and its minimum width is 31 inches. The pit must be centered in the pitcher's box. If the pit is less than the maximum dimensions, the extra space shall be filled with the same material of which the platforms are made, or some other material different than the pit substance, and shall be level with the pit and platforms. b. Pitching Platforms - The pitching platforms flank the pit to its left and right sides and are parallel to each other. They shall be level with each other and to the top of the pit. They shall be 18 to 20-1/2 inches wide (depending upon the width of the pit) and shall be a minimum of 6 ft. long.

3. Stakes - The stake is the target at which the shoe is pitched. Each stake shall be centered between the platforms with a minimum of 21 inches from the stake to the front and back of the pit. On regulation courts the stakes are 40 ft. apart. This is measured from the front of each stake level with the pitching platform. Stakes shall be 1 inch in diameter and may be made of cold-rolled steel, mild iron, soft metal or synthetic material. Each stake shall be no shorter than 14 and no higher than 15 inches above pit level and they shall both have an approximate 3 inch lean toward each other.

4. Pit Substance - Clay, sand, dirt and synthetic compositions are all legal substances to put in the pit. The minimum depth of the substance shall be 4 inches. An 8 inch depth is recommended.

5. Extended Platforms - The pitching platforms on either side of the pit shall be extended forward (toward the opposite pit) an additional 10 feet to accommodate pitching at shorter distances. The front of the extended platforms shall be 27 feet from the opposite stake. The extended platforms shall be level with and be of the same width and material as the full-distance platforms. It is recommended that the 14 feet between the front ends of the platforms be filled in (using the same material as the platforms) to provide a continuous level walking surface between the two pitcher's boxes.

6. Multiple Courts a. Side-by-side - To eliminate distraction and safely separate activity, stakes of courts adjacent to each other shall be a minimum of 10 feet apart. A greater distance (at least 12 feet) is preferable. b. Back-to-back - A minimum of 16 feet and a protective barrier must separate the stakes of back-to-back courts.

7. Backboards & Protective Barrier a. Backboards - Every pit should have a backboard. It should be at least 3 feet behind the stake, be at least 1 foot high and extend the width of the pit. For spectator visibility, a mesh netting or chain link material is recommended. If of solid material, it should be a color that will provide a contrasting background so as to keep the stake visible for the contestants.

8. Foul Lines - Foul lines shall be defined by lines extending across the front of the full-distance and extended platforms. This places them perpendicular to an imaginary line between stakes at 37 and 27 ft. respectively from the front of the opposite stakes. (Measured at the level of the pitching platform).

9. Imaginary Stakes - Imaginary stakes shall be marked midway between the left and right extended platforms at a distance of 30 feet from the opposite stakes. They shall also be marked on the full-distance platforms at a distance of 40 feet from the opposite stakes if the stakes are not 40 feet apart. Note: The Summer Pitch Tournament Association realizes that many sets of courts now in existence do not meet all of the conditions listed in Rule 1. All new courts shall be constructed using the guidelines in Rule 1 and charters are encouraged to modify their existing courts to meet these standards as soon as possible.

RULE 2 - PLAYING EQUIPMENT - THE HORSESHOE

Section A. Legal Shoes the sport of horseshoes is played with specially manufactured equipment. Any official (legal) horseshoe must be sanctioned and approved by the Summer Pitch Tournament Association and must pass the following maximum weight and measurement standards. (There are no minimum standards): 1) It shall not weigh more than 2 pounds, 10 ounces; 2) it shall not exceed 7-1/4 inches in width, 7-5/8 inches in length and, on a parallel line 3/4 inch from a straightedge touching the points of the shoe, the opening of the shoe must not exceed 3-1/2 inches. (A 1/8 inch tolerance to 3-5/8 inches is allowed on used shoes.) No part of the original manufactured shoe may exceed one inch in height. Shoes not meeting these requirements shall not be used in Summer Pitch Tournament Association sanctioned competition and all games pitched with illegal shoes shall be forfeited. All horseshoes used by a pitcher may be checked at any time to verify they are legal shoes for weight, measurement and altered shoes. This checking will be done by a judge or other tournament official.

Section B. ALTERED SHOES Any shoe which has been changed from its original design (calk, notch, etc.) shall be considered an "altered" shoe. An "altered" shoe is illegal and cannot be used in sanctioned play. Note: The Summer Pitch Tournament Association Executive Council has the right to waive the "altered" shoe provision for a physically impaired contestant.

Section C. SHOES SANCTIONED BY OTHER COUNTRIES any shoes sanctioned by another country are permissible in Summer Pitch Tournament Association sanctioned play only for contestants from that country, and then only if they meet Summer Pitch Tournament Association specification. They are not allowable (for U.S. citizens) in Summer Pitch Tournament Association sanctioned events unless they are also sanctioned by the Summer Pitch Tournament Association. RULE 3 -

PITCHING DISTANCES
Section A. Males
1. Juniors - Junior contestants may pitch from any place on either the full-distance or extended platforms. They must observe the 27 foot foul lines. Juniors' age nine or under, for the entire calendar year, may observe a 20-foot foul line.
2. Open Men and Seniors - All Open Men and Senior contestants shall pitch from on or behind the full distance platforms adjacent to the pits and observe the 37 foot foul lines. Physically impaired males in these categories may be given permission by the governing Summer Pitch Tournament Association officials to move on to the extended platforms and observe the 27 foot foul lines. ((Note pitchers impaired by alcohol or other foreign substances do not apply)).
3. Elders - Elders are classified as short-distance pitchers, shall pitch less than the full-distance, and observe the 27 foot foul line.

Section B. Females - All female contestants may pitch from any place on the full-distance or extended platforms and observe the 27 foot foul lines, except that any woman pitching in an Elders class must pitch less than 40 feet.

RULE 4 - PIT PREPARATION AND MAINTENANCE

Section A. Every effort shall be made to keep the substance in the pit in soft loose dirt condition so the shoes will not bounce or move around after coming in contact with the substance. The substance in the pit shall be watered (if necessary) and leveled to the top of the surrounding platforms (unless the pits are raised) before a game starts. Each contestant is responsible for one pit, but a contestant may have someone else do the preparation. During a game, a contestant shall not step on, mash, or otherwise repair any of the substance in the scoring area of the pit without the consent of the opponent or a tournament official. Repair needed because of a measured shoe or a shoe which was "buried" shall be handled using the same guidelines.

NOTE: Pits composed of sand or dirt often "hollow out" after a few innings. A blanket statement by the tournament director (made before competition begins) shall allow the leveling of these courts as needed without constant consent between the contestants. Section B. With the permission of the tournament committee, the stakes may be painted for visibility purposes before a game starts. This procedure shall not be done while a game is in progress, unless both contestants agree to do it.

RULE 5 - GAME PREPARATION Section A. It is customary for contestants to find out their court assignments and warm up on the court for their first game. The court should be prepared for play during this time in order to get all games started about the same time.

Section B. Each game will begin with the flip of a shoe or coin. The winner of the flip will have choice of first or second pitch.

Section C. Only after all games of a round are complete. Contestants shall go promptly to their next assigned court and each prepares one pit for play. (If during the time it takes to complete a round a contestant wants to practice he/she shall practice on the court where they just finished their game so as not to be a distraction by preparing a court near a game still in progress.) After both pits have been prepared, the contestants have the option to pitch no more than four warm up shoes. Then the game must start immediately.

Section D. A contestant may practice while waiting for their next opponent.

RULE 6 - PLAY OF THE GAME AND VALUE OF THE SHOE

Section A. Innings The game is broken down into innings. Each inning consists of four pitched shoes, two by each contestant.

Section B. Value of the Shoe 1. Ringer - A ringer is a shoe which comes to rest encircling the stake. A straightedge touching both points or any part of the heel calks of the shoe must clear (not touch) the stake in order for a shoe to be declared a ringer. A ringer has a value of three points. 2. Shoe in Count - A shoe which is not a ringer but comes to rest with any portion of it within a horse shoe length of any part of the stake is a shoe in count. A shoe in count has a value of one point. 3. A "leaner", a shoe which is touching the stake (but not a ringer), is considered to still be upright (+5 degrees from the ground) has a value of two points. 4. Shoe Out of Count - A shoe which comes to rest further than a horseshoe length from the stake is a shoe out of count and has no scoring value. A shoe which is declared to be a foul shoe (see Section H) is considered to be a shoe out of count (no matter where it comes to rest).

Section C. Delivery of Shoes
1. The contestant pitching first shall deliver both shoes (one at a time) and then the other contestant shall deliver both shoes (one at a time). A contestant may deliver the shoes from either the left or right platform but, in any one inning, both shoes must be delivered from the same platform. A contestant shall pitch the entire tournament with the same hand or arm, except in the case of a medical emergency.
2. A contestant shall deliver both shoes within 1 minute. The time shall start when the contestant steps onto the platform with the intention of pitching. (As opposed to retrieving shoes or removing foreign material from the platform).

NOTE: Extra time taken to repair a damaged shoe by filing a burr, etc., or a delay resulting from a distraction not caused by the contestants, shall not be penalized.

Section D. Position of Contestants during Delivery
3. THE PITCHER. During the entire address and release of the shoe, the pitcher must not start or step completely outside the platform with either foot. Exceptions: (a) A contestant observing the 37 ft foul line may start directly behind the platform provided they step within it when they release the shoe. (b) A physically challenged contestant must have at least some contact with the platform and be completely behind the 27 ft. line when the shoe is released.

4. THE OPPONENT. An opponent's position when not pitching, shall be standing stationary on or behind the same court's opposite platform and at least 2 feet behind a contestant who is pitching from the same or adjacent court. In mixed distance pitching, a short distance pitcher who pitches first must return to this position on or behind the 40-foot platform.

5. THE CONTESTANTS. If both contestants use the same platform to deliver their shoes, the contestant pitching first should cross over to the other platform in front of the pit and then move to the proper position. (see #2) As the first contestant is crossing in front the second contestant should be crossing over in back and mounting the platform from the rear. If both contestants use opposite platforms, the contestant who pitches first should step directly back to the proper position described in #2 of this section. 6. No contestant shall walk to the opposite stake (except to remove a foul shoe) or be informed of the position of any pitched shoes prior to completion of an inning.

Section E. Flow of the Game
1. Once the four shoes in an inning have been pitched, the contestants shall walk to the other end to determine the score for the inning and retrieve their shoes. No shoe shall be moved before its scoring value is determined. If the decision is in doubt, a judge shall be called. The judge shall make the necessary measurement(s) and determine the scoring for the shoes in question. (Contestants are encouraged to carry measuring devices and to make their own decisions whenever possible to help speed up play.) Play shall continue in similar fashion in each inning until the game limit is reached.

2. At any one time, a contestant shall carry and use only two horseshoes during the course of a game. A spare shoe or shoes should be kept available at court side in case of a broken shoe or if the contestant desires to switch shoes. Shoes may be switched between innings, but not during an inning unless a shoe breaks (see Section F).

3. If it is discovered during an inning that a contestant has pitched the shoe of an opponent, then if the contestants agree the remaining shoes may be pitched and the score be based on the shoes they pitched. If they don't agree on pitching the remaining shoes then the shoes shall be picked up and the entire inning shall be re-pitched using the correct shoes. If the contestants fail to discover the error until after all four shoes have been pitched, the inning shall be scored on the basis of whatever shoes they pitched. If agreement cannot be reached, a judge shall be called. Based upon the input from the contestants, the judge shall either determine the scoring for the inning or void it and order it to be re-pitched.

4. When a shoe is being measured by a contestant and it (or the stake) is accidentally moved, the inning shall be scored only if the contestants can come to an agreement. If no Agreement can be reached, a judge shall be called. As in (3) above, the judge shall either determine the scoring or void the inning and order it to be repitched.

EXCEPTIONS: If one or more shoes (are obvious ringers and have been agreed to by the contestants) are moved to make a measurement they need not be repitched. Only the shoe(s) in question when the shoe or stake was moved must be scored or ordered repitched by the judge. If one or more shoes are below the shoe(s) in question, they will be scored and remain in place for the repitch. No scored shoes will have the scoring changed due to a repitch.

NOTE: If a judge moves a shoe (or the stake) while making a measurement, the judge shall either determine the scoring for the inning or void it and order it to be repitched. 5. It is legal for a contestant to carry and use a blunt ended hook or shoe pick-up device not exceeding 36 inches in total length. Any hook on the device cannot protrude more than 2 inches from the main shaft. Care should be taken in using the hook so as not to endanger the opponent. Also, contestants are encouraged to carry a file and towel to keep their shoes smooth and shoes and hands clean and dry.

Section F. Broken and Cracked Shoes

1. Broken Shoes a. If a shoe breaks into two or more parts when it hits the stake or lands in the pit, the parts shall be removed and another shoe shall be allowed to be pitched instead. If the shoe broke when striking the backboard or other "foul" ground, it is foul and may not be repitched. b. If a shoe has landed in the pit and becomes broken by having another shoe land on it, it shall be scored as it appears to lay. If there is any disagreement, a judge shall be called. The judge shall either determine the scoring for the inning or void it and order it to be repitched.

2. Cracked Shoes - If a shoe is discovered to be cracked (but not completely broken in two), it shall be scored as it lays. Once the scoring is determined, it shall be replaced.

Section G. Broken Stakes A broken stake is defined as any stake not in the same position as when the game started, and when both contestants agree that it is broken. When the stake breaks during an inning, the game shall be discontinued at the end of the previous inning and the stake replaced. If a stake breaks as the result of being struck by the fourth shoe of the inning, then it shall be counted. If they cannot agree, then a judge shall be called. The judge shall either determine the scoring for the inning or void it and order it to be repitched. (Once the scoring is determined, the tournament officials may decide to complete the game on another court or hold the completion until a later time.) If not, once the stake is replaced, the contestants may take four warm up shoes each (if they so desire) and play shall resume.

Section H. Foul Shoe A foul shoe is a shoe which was delivered in non-compliance with one of the rules of the game. It scores as a shoe out of count and is to be removed from

VALUE OF THE SHOE The pit (if it is in the scoring radius of the stake) before any more shoes are pitched. Shoes already in the pit that have been disturbed by a foul shoe are not to be removed, unless they were knocked into foul territory and are returned to the scoring area. 1. The following are rule violations that must be spotted and called by an assigned judge. The penalty is to declare the shoe a foul shoe.
(a) Any shoe pitched when the contestant has made contact with the foul line before the shoe is released.(Rule 1,#8)
(b) Except as provided in the "Exceptions" of Rule 6, D, #1 any shoe pitched when the contestant has started or stepped completely outside the pitching platform with either foot before releasing the shoe
(c) Any shoe not delivered within the thirty second time limit. (Rule 6, Section C, #2).
(d) One shoe when a contestant has illegally stepped on the scoring area of the playing surface. When this violation occurs, the contestant shall pitch only one shoe in the next inning. The second shoe shall be carried to the other end or thrown for no points and cleared out. (Rule 4, Section A).
(e) The second shoe, if it is pitched from a different platform than the first shoe. (Rule 6, Section C) 2. The following occurrences are also considered foul shoes and the shoes must be removed from the pit (if they are in the scoring radius of the stake) before any more shoes are delivered unless all competitors in that game agree to leave the shoe where it is. a. Any shoe which contacted the background, court frame, or any ground outside the pit before it came to rest. b. Any shoe which struck a previously defined object such as a tree limb, wire, indoor court ceiling, etc.

NOTE: A shoe which strikes a foreign moving object (this does not include foreign beer bottle or cans) is not foul and may be repitched. c. The second shoe if the contestant changes shoes after the first shoe has been pitched. The only exception is if the first shoe has broken in two and qualifies for a repitch.(Rule 6 Sec E, #2) d. Any shoe that leaves a contestant's hand once the final forward swing of the delivery process has started shall count as a pitched shoe. If it touches any ground outside of the target pit, it shall be counted as a foul shoe. A shoe that is accidentally dropped by a contestant before the final forward swing has started shall not be considered foul and may be picked up and pitched. 3. A contestant's shoes shall be called foul if the contestant removes any shoe before the scoring of that shoe has been agreed upon. A judge shall be called if a decision cannot be reached. The judge shall determine the scoring for the inning.

Section I. Protests if a contestant desires to make a protest, the protest shall be made to the judge or tournament official at the time the problem occurs. The tournament committee shall make the final ruling on all protests.
RULE 7 - LENGTH OF THE GAME The length of a game shall be determined before play begins. There are three options:

Point Limit - The game shall be played to a predetermined number of points. 15 or 21 points is the suggested amount. The first contestant to reach (or exceed by at least 2 points) that amount is the winner. All final matches will be played to 21.
Skunk – This is when one team reaches 11 points and the opposing team score remains at 0. The game is over.
Time Limit – All games will be played to a predetermined time limit of 35 minutes. For further explanation (See Rule 6 Section C,#1)

a. A calibrated and approved stop watches counter will be supplier by tournament officials at every pit. b. Plays responsible to START the stop watch/Timer at the beginning of match and STOP at the conclusion of 35minutes. (See Rule 6 Section C,#3) c. The team with the highest score at the end of 35 min will be deemed the winner. For further explanation (See Rule 6 Section C,#1) d. In the event of a final championship game, the time limit rule will not be utilized. The winning team must achieve 15/21 points (this can happen 2 games in a row if the loser bracket team wins first match)

RULE 8 - SCORING THE GAME - SINGLES PLAY There is one method of scoring in horseshoes - cancellation Section A. Cancellation Scoring

1. In cancellation scoring, only one contestant can score in each inning.
a. Ringers - Ringers cancel each other. A ringer of one contestant shall cancel a ringer of the other contestant those shoes shall not score any points. Any uncancelled (live) ringer scores three points.
b. Shoes in Count - A shoe in count shall score one point under the following conditions:
1. If there are cancelled ringers and no live ringer, the closest shoe in count to the stake shall score one point.
2. If there are no ringers, the closest shoe in count shall score one point. If the other shoe of that same contestant is the second closest shoe in count, it shall also score one point.
3. If there is one uncancelled ringer and the other shoe of the scoring contestant is the closest shoe in count to the stake, it shall score one point (four point’s total).
4. If there is “Leaner” with no other opposing pitcher matches or beats (with a ringer) 2 points are awarded.
5. If there is “Leaner” and the other shoe of the scoring contestant is the closest shoe in count to the stake, it shall score one point (three point’s total).
NOTE: Opposing contestant's shoes in count that are touching the stake or are determined to be an equal distance from the stake shall cancel each other and, like cancelled ringers, shall score no points. In that situation, the next closest shoe in count, if there is one, shall score one point.
1. Calling the Score
a. Points shall be awarded in the following situations. The contestant scoring the points shall call the score.
1. No ringer with the closest shoe in count - call "one point".
2. No ringer with the two closest shoes in count - call "two points".
3. One ringer with either no shoe in count or the other contestant having the closes shoe in count - call "one ringer, three points".
4. One ringer with the closest shoe in count - call "one ringer, four points".
5. Two canceled ringers with the closest shoe in count - call "one ringer each, one point".
6. Two cancelled ringers with one uncancelled ringer - call "three ringers, three points".
7. Two uncancelled ringers - call "two ringers, six points".
b. No points shall be awarded in the following situations. The score shall be called by the contestant who pitched second.
1. All four shoes out of count - call "Open Pit", “OP Cords”, “Whoopi Goldberg”.
2. Two cancelled ringers with no shoes in count or with the other two shoes an equal distance from the stake - call "one ringer each, no score".
3. Four cancelled ringers - call "Four Dead".

RULE 9 - PITCHING ROTATION DURING THE GAME
Section A. When the game is to be played under cancellation scoring, there is one way to determine who shall pitch first in the next inning once the game has started. The method to be used shall be determined before play begins.
1. The contestant who scored in the preceding inning shall pitch first in the next inning. If neither pitcher scores, the contestant who pitched second last (also known as “follow your shoes”) in the preceding inning shall pitch first in the next inning.

Section B. If it is discovered during an inning (before all four shoes are pitched) that the wrong contestant has pitched first, the shoes pitched so far in that inning shall be picked up and the inning shall be repitched. If the error is not discovered until after all four shoes have been delivered, they shall be scored as they lay and the correct rotation shall be re-established for the rest of the game.

RULE 10 - DOUBLES PLAY Section A Regular Doubles In regular doubles, each team uses one pair of shoes and the contestants stay at the same end of the court for the entire game. To begin the game, the highest rated contestants shall decide first pitch and pitch their shoes, just as in singles competition. Their partners at the other end shall decide and call the score, retrieve the shoes and pitch them back and the same procedure is followed. The decision on who pitches first in each inning is contingent upon the scoring system being used, following the rules of singles play. There are no substitutions allow, if one player is not present or unable to continue a forfeit will be deceided by tournamnet officals.

RULE 11 - APPROPRIATE SUMMER PITCH TOURNAMENT MEMBER CONDUCT
Section A. On the Courts All Summer Pitch Tournament Association members, while in competition, maybe allowed to make disturbing noises & movements that would/could distract the opponent or competitors on adjacent courts. Projectiles & Foreign objects MAY NOT be used to distract opposing team.

Section B. Behavior Any Summer Pitch Tournament Association member who indulges in heckling, unfair rooting, or any other form of unsportsmanlike conduct toward any Summer Pitch Tournament Association member or tournament official, shall be subject equal to or greater treatment during tournament and the tournament site. This covers any inappropriate behavior (including profane or abusive language) in, or around, the court area. The member shall also be subject to shots of liquor or public humiliation. Suspension from the Summer Pitch Tournament Association is impossible

Section C. Alcohol, Drugs, and Performance Enhancements 1. Any Summer Pitch Tournament Association member who is challenged with alcohol or any other substance offered to a team by team member or opposing team cannot be denied. This included: shots of booze, pounding beers, and taking drinks of any type of beverage must be accepted or penalty will result. Penalties will be determined by the 2 teams before match begins. Tournament organizers always have the final say on penalties NOTE: If one of the pitchers does not drink alcohol any liquid can be substitute for the challenge same rules apply for other contestants with sobriety requirements.

RULE 12 - TOURNAMENT PLAY
Section A The standard method of Summer Pitch Tournament Association sanctioned tournament play is double elimination play with contestants initial seeding by random will be placed into appropriate brackets to start tournament play. No special privileges for past champions. In some cases depending on number of participating pitchers a team may be fortunate to receive a round one bye.

Section B The rules used to seed contestants in all Summer Pitch Tournament Association sanctioned tournaments are found in Articles X-XII of the Summer Pitch Tournament Association Bylaws.
a. All members of Summer Pitch Tournament Association must have a team name. If no team name, the event organizers will assign the team name for the 2 players.

Section C The Summer Pitch Tournament Association Dress Code for Tournament play is pitcher dresses at there own risk. Shoes/Sandals are encouraged, but not required, for Summer Pitch Tournament Association sanctioned play. a. Uniforms are not required but show class and professionalism to Summer Pitch Tournament Association members.
b. No cleeted shoes can be wore these would be considered unfair advantage and cleats are forbid in tournament play
c. Gloves may not be worn. This can compromise the method of with a shoe is pitched. All gloves are forbid. If a pitcher demands a glove is not compromising the throw and is using the glove for hygienic reason the administration will determine if this is acceptable.

Section D Award Etiquette There is several awards issue during a Summer Pitch event. Summer Pitch Champions, Ringer King Award, and Kings of the Losers Bracket are the 3 awards currently up for grabs on game day.

Summer Pitch Champions - In the event of winning Summer Pitch Tournament winners will receive the pride of Summer Pitch Championship Trophy & Cash Prize.

· Championship Trophy will be awarded · Winners will have there picture taken · Team names and pitchers name will be archived. · Ca$h prize will be issued at the end of tournament

Ringer King- Ringer Tally Cards will be issued for each team before every match. Each team is responsible for keeping accurate records of all ringers. All 4 players on a court must agree when a ringer is scored. A Summer Pitch Official or third party judge will help decide a “legal” ringer. Ruled Edged ringer gauges will be available at all tournaments to determine if a ring is legal. Tournament score keeper will keep a log of each player’s ringer total. At the end of the tournament 1 person will become Ringer King. In the event of tie the total number of people. Who have the most ringers will have a sudden death pitch off. A coin toss will decide who leads off. If more than 2 players are in the pitch off then the order will determined by tournament status. The highest placing pitcher goes first.

· ALL ringers are tallied, even if ringers are cancelled · Both teams may review other teams ringer cards · Cards will be signed by tournament score keeper and scoring players

King of the Loser Bracket (3rd place) – The team who loses in the early rounds of the tournament will be forced to continue playing in the loser’s bracket. The team who can survive the longest and win the most games in the loser bracket will become the King of the Losers Bracket

· Total loser bracket wins will only be counted. · It is not possible to be kings of the loser bracket and tournament champion. · A prize & recognition will be given to the kings of the loser’s bracket. Section E Defending the Title

If Summer Pitch Tournament Association members are not present to defend the Title tournament play will commence and the Title will be up for grabs. This will terminate and such win streak a team has/had going.
The Title cannot be challenged outside of major tournament play (4 or more teams equate a major tournament.)
Tournament officials will do there best to work with current champions to schedule play on best possible date.

RULE 13 - TOURNAMENT AND SANCTIONED LEAGUE ADMINISTRATION
Section A All Summer Pitch Tournament Association sanctioned tournaments and leagues shall have a designated score keeper and/or director to administer the activities. The committee or director shall:

1. Publicize the event.
a. Announce the date, place, entry fee, prize list, registration deadline, and any other information a member will need in order to participate.
b. Announce classifications available to entrants.
c. Announce the method of play (cancellation), the length of the games (21 points) and whether or not alternate pitch will be used.
d. Announce if 11-0 deficit constitutes as a skunk and the game ends
2. Set up the playing format, assign contestants to their proper courts and provide contestants with a schedule of games to be played.

3. Make sure all entrants are Summer Pitch Tournament Association members.

4. Arrange for the score tower for each court and for their remuneration. The method and amount of pay shall be announced before play begins. The side on which the score tower resides will be the responsibility of these player to track the score accurately.

5. Have statisticians available for the compilation of tournament results.

6. Have judges available.

7. Handle all protests and make the final decisions on any items that may come up.

8. Make the decision to halt play because of inclement weather and decide when play shall continue if conditions improve.

9. Make the awards and presentations at the end of play.

10. See that the results are sent to the charter statistician (Summer Pitch Tournament Association) for proper recording.

Section B Judges. See judging guidelines.

1. Judges shall be appointed by the tournament committee. Their duties are:
a. To enforce the rules and issue the proper penalties if violations occur.
b. To measure for ringers, the closest shoe to the stake and shoes in count when asked to do so by the contestants.
c. To help make the proper decision in situations involving broken shoes, broken stakes, shoes and stakes moved by contestants during measurements, shoes pitched out of turn and a contestant's shoes mistakenly pitched by the opponent.
d. To act as a liaison between the contestants and the tournament committee in all possible situations.
2. The decision(s) made by judges in 1,a-c above shall be accepted as final by the contestants and the game shall continue on from that point.

With a little less than a week before the final tournament for Summer Series 2009 some big developments regarding the rule book have come about. Summer Series Tournament Association has updated the current rulebook to remove RULE 12 Section G “The Gibson Clause.”

RULE 12 - TOURNAMENT PLAY Section G The Gibson Clause In the event that more than 1 Gibson family member (Roy, Peg, Steve, Danny, Tommy) are present for a tournament certain rules apply. 1. No 2 Gibson family members can be on the same team 2. A married in family member maybe allowed. 3. If immediate blood relative family members AKA cousins, uncles, nephews are present it will be decided by tournament administration if the potential partnering will be permitted. The rule no longer is applicable with the level of competition Sumer Series Tournaments is currently maintaining. Originally the rule was to promote more evenly matched finals and to avoid the monopolization of one family’s dominance with the upstart sporting organization. The Summer Series Staff are confident this will not change the current state of competition within the series.

Also it should be noted a new award will be given for Female MVP of the tournament. A female competitor who achieves any OR the most of the following goals could become Female MVP of Tournament.

Ladies and Gentlemen we are just 8 days away from the finale of the Summer Series 2009. Team Sixpack have clearly been the team to beat but rumors are swirling about in the horseshoe community…will the duo both be able to make the final round? What does that mean for the rest of us?

Well there is a mathematical chance Frego & Stangle could lose the tour championship it is not likely but it is possible.

IF Frego & Stangle were to both miss the tourney AND we have at the very least 22 teams registered for the tournament… Nate Wayne & John Viola would then need to win 2 rounds in the winner’s bracket, and then loose. Forcing them to the loser’s bracket. Team John Wayne would then need win every match in the loser bracket & win 2 times in the finals giving them enough overall points to defeat Team Six Pack for the title.
It is a long shot but the gambling community needs to know the possibilities.
Regardless this is still a championship tournament and a tournament champion will be decided & prizes will be given. Mission Pipe & Cigar have already started to stock pile excellent tobacco products for the winners & participants.

Summer Series Stars Shine in SF

The 1st annual San Francisco International Horseshoe Tournament took place on Sept 12th. It was the official kick off of the newly renovated SF Horseshoe Grotto located in Golden Gate Park. San Francisco Horseshoe Pitching Club founder Peter Zepponi and good friend of Summer Series was instrumental making the event happen.

The Guardsmen a volunteer organization that helps at risk children was on hand along with other well know celebrities. 2 x WORLD CHAMPION Brian Simmons of Vermont flew in for the event. Also featured was 3x California State Women's and Men's Champions, Kimmy Stockli and Rick Bermingham. San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom was on hand to throw the first shoe. Finally current Summer Series point’s leader Eric Frego and Eastbay horseshoe pitching icon Steve Gibson participated in the inaugural event.

2x World Champ Brian Simmons gives the SF pits a go

The tournament featured A & B group depending on skill level. The Dead Ringers (Gibson & Frego) competed in the ultra competitive A’s. The team from the Eastbay moved swiftly into the finals where they became silver medalist in the inaugural event. Congratulation Frego & Gibson see you both Oct 3rd for the final round.

The 3rd and final round of Summer Series is set to go off on Saturday October 3rd 2009. Summer Pitch 4 the Finale presented by Mission Pipe Shop. This will be the final stop in the 2009 series. Can Frego & Stangle sweep the 2009 championship?

Will Team Hustla make a triumphant comeback?

Can the Good Ole Boys actually make 2 events in arrow? And the big question…

Will a victory go to a Gibson family member.

Danny Gibson & Rico Castro were close when Team Moose Knuckle made it to the finals.
We will have to see if this silver medal team shows up for the Finale.

Team Six Pack might have clinched the overall championship BUT the Summer Pitch 4 title is still up for grabs.

Frego & Stangle Get Green

Well going green is all the range and current points’ leader Brad Stangle & Eric Frego did it convincingly winning the 1st annual Eastbay Master Presented by Prime Smoke Meats. This marks Team Six Pack’s second championship this summer and the team is looking to sweep these freshmen series.

Stangle & Frego may be wearing the green jackets but there was plenty of action taking place leading up to the finals. By 11:30 20 teams were registered and warmed-up for action. After what some say a controversial random seeding (drawn from a hat) the first 16 teams took the pits. Early on we saw veteran teams like Rockstar, SNUS, & The Horseshoe Pimps go 2-&-OUT. These teams would resort to money games & drinking for the remainder of the day. SFHPC Peter Zeponni & John Bastian fought long & hard to stay in the winner’s bracket but a lost to Team Moose Knuckle forced them to the looser bracket where they would have to fight their way out ONLY to get defeated again by none other than Dan Gibson & Rico Castro. This newly team formed Team Moose Knuckle was quite a force to be reckoned with.

Other noteables were the rookie teams that came to compete The Real Housewives of Alameda County use to cheer on their husbands on Team Bacon Saturday out there trying to win some bacon. Speaking of bacon Steve Sacks & Dan Merrigan of The Porkers had a rough first round but had a win in the loser’s bracket let’s hope these two come back for the Finale later this summer.

First timers to summer series Joe Pereira & Scott Kramer or The Panty Droppers may not have had great luck in the tourney they found a home later on at the money games. The team who was most improved had to be The D Nozzles. Dale Garret & Jeff Ally kept it going throughout the day and reaching the top seven with a little help from Mr. Neil Diamond. Good Jobs D Nozzles! Biggest Shock…Dead Ringers not making the top 5…You can bet Steve Gibson will be looking for redemption later this summer. In the end it was a lot of the players & teams we expected in the top five.

Mutli time Summer Series finalist Team Hustla is OUT! That’s right players this gives everyone in the top 10 an excellent chance to make up some championship points.
Steve Gibson as mention last week was left without a teammate when Eric Kramer had to bail…So Steve has drafted unofficial Gib Boy Kevin Losic to fill the open seat with Team Dead Ringers. Gibson claims he and Losic have pitched together in the past and is confident Losic has what it takes to get to the finals
The Porkers Dan Merrigan & Steve Sacks were spotted training at the Pleasanton aquatic park over the weekend it is good see these two taking the tournament seriously
The Good Ole Boys might not be confirmed but were out at Robertson training over the weekend.
Fan Favorites Krissy Baker & Aimee Bull has teamed up and expects to make a decent showing.
Bacon Saturday & The Real House Wives of Alameda County has been training together and rumor has it the housewives pulled a victory on the Bacon Duo.

Both Round 1 finalist Team Hustla & Team Six Pack have been extremely quiet. Round 2 might be great opportunity to make up some championship points.

A healthy Steve Gibson has been training on a regular basis & rumor is Dead Ringers teammate Eric Kramer is OUT so Steve will be playing with a NEW partner more on this sorry next week.

In other Gibson related news Phil Higgins the brother in law of Steve Gibson was spotted at Robertson last week throwing some decent shoes I guess all that training with Steve is paying off. Good Luck Phil.
Round 2 title sponsor Prime Smoke Meats will have a team this year. The Porkers Dan Merrigan & Steve Sacks first timers to the Summer Series Tour.
The Hyphy Wifeys have been logging in some hours at Robertson as well throwing NEW Alan Francis All-On shoes it might be just what the doctor ordered for these two.
Team SFHPC (San Francisco Horseshoe Pitching Club) Jon Bastian & Peter Zepponi have confirmed and plan to put in a good showing at the Masters. Please note these guys were runner-ups at the Lord of the Ringers Tournament back in May (see photo below)

Newly formed team of Ken Grimes & Sean Taylor Team Bacon Saturday have been training, apparently Sean Taylor warmed up by doing a triathlon in preparation for the master.
Team SNUS from the USA has been preparing to get the title back and as always reeking of professionalism & cheap cologne.

American Dream Paul Everett has reported he and Matt Arterburn have been training and Matt’s ringer percentage has gone up slightly, good luck gentlemen.

OTHER NEWS
I reserved a port-O-potty to be onsite so that will be nice. The pits have been getting some regular use so they seem to be in decent shape. I just got the green jackets back from the dry cleaners and the bacon will be on ice for the team who make it to the finals and seals the deal.

This is a newly formed team is a collaberation between Summer Series veteran Dan Gibson & SFHPC Rico "Clown Baby" Castro.

Dan Gibson is the youngest of the Gibson clan and is always top 5 team at the summer series tournaments no matter who his partner is.

Rico Castro also has seen his share of success competing in the Lord of the Ringers Tournament in San Francisco winning in 2008 and scoring top 5 finishes in 2009.

When these two forces joined up for The East Bay Masters presented by Prime Smoked Meats they moved through the tournament brackets with ease ending up in the finals. Only time will tell if this alliance will last and if the duo can capture a Summer Series Victory. That is why Team Moose Knuckle is the hot team to watch on the tour.

East Bay Summer Series - Recently Updated Pages

It saddens me to have to write such an update but I have been getting a lot of inquiries…one of my old friends and a recent competitor of East Bay Summer Series, Dee Sargent passed away Saturday evening following the event. He was 38 years old and leaves behind a wife and 2 children.

I know everyone meets a lot of new people during these events so I just wanted to share team photo of Dee so you can put a face to the name.

The final tournament of 2010; Mission Pipe presents Summer Pitch 5 will be dedicated to Dee and all the proceeds will be donated to Team Sargent Trust Fund.
